BIOL 562 - Shaping National Science Polic
This seminar introduces students to science advocacy. It begins with introductory discussions of the political system. Then, it transitions into hardball politics with guest-hosted lectures from congressional science staff, science journalists, and science lobbyists. The seminar concludes with an examination of five case studies in science advocacy. Students work on one project throughout the semester. They break into teams, identify a politically relevant science issue of their own choosing, develop an advocacy strategy, and then take their issue to Congress. The seminar is three credits. Biology students count one credit towards a degree. Physics students count the class as an elective towards a degree.
