ENGL 157 - Romantic & Realist: 19C US Lit
This course involves a close and considered reading of the most important literary texts inscribed by Americans in the nineteenth century, the most important century in fixing American identity. We will read texts by Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Twain, James, Melville and Dreiser, and consider how far they are relevant to our present circumstances.
