ENGL 283 - Intro to Fiction Writing
This course explores the art and craft of fiction writing. We will ask fundamental questions about this multi-dimensional genre by studying and writing across a range of styles. Active reading will accompany active writing. Explorations of different techniques (voice, character, setting, plot, description, narrative structure, and other elements) will fuel each student's writing experiments. Readings will challenge and grow your repertoire of fictional forms and contents. Assignments will exercise the imagination through engagements with varied narrative strategies. We also will think about the history of this genre to consider its possible futures. While actively writing and reading works by established writers and fellow students, you will work to develop strong editorial and critique skills, develop a sustained writing practice, and encourage the same of your peers. The course will involve a mandatory field trip and a final portfolio.
