GEST 307 - Pol Economy of Eur Integration
This course addresses problems and challenges of political economy that contemporary Europe and specifically the European Union must attempt to solve in the process of integration. We begin the semester with an examination at the conceptual level, with the complex interaction between markets and politics -- and then move on to examine other relevant themes such as European integration, policy responses to economic crisis, and the political economy of immigration. Students will delve into the specifics of European economies in order to understand the broader patterns of similarity and difference that characterize the region. Students will study political economy at both the national and supranational level; the semester will end with a simulation of an EU summit in which the member states confront a common challenge or crisis.
