GEST 400 - Immigration:Reshap Euro Politc
Overview: This seminar examines the relationship between immigration, ethnic diversity and politics in European post-industrial democracies. It covers three broad - and related - areas of study. The first one investigates the factors that explain cross-country differences in immigration flows, immigration-related legislation, as well as modes of immigrant incorporation. The second area of study examines the nature and determinants of anti-immigrant sentiments within the native-born population. The third area of study focuses on the factors that shape aggregate phenomena such as the electoral success of the far right, riots and violence, the rise of welfare chauvinism (i.e. limiting immigrants’ access to the welfare state) and the formation, or lack thereof, of an immigrant voting-bloc. When necessary, comparison extends beyond Europe to also include the United States. Students should be ready to engage with different fields of study such as social psychology, microeconomics, comparative politics and sociology.
