GOVT 442 - Civil War in Developing Countr
Why do some countries experience civil war? In this course, we will analyze the leading theories of civil-war outbreak. We will first unpack national-level conditions present in countries that experience war and absent in countries that are at peace. Second, we will investigate the micro-logic of violence, why individuals choose to fight. Our goal is to evaluate the logic behind these theories, critically assess the quantitative and qualitative evidence, and develop questions for new research.
