HEST 001 - First Year HEST Colloquium
HEST-001-01 (Diane Davis & Kelly Grady)

In this section we will examine the evidence of wellness related to college health issues. Specifically, we will explore the motivators, facilitators and obstacles to well being as a college student. The American College Health Assessment data: http://www.achancha.org/ will provide a framework of our examination of issues impacting health and wellness for first year college students.


HEST-001-02 (Jason Tilan and Jennifer Ericson)

In this section, we will examine scientific theory and explore its meaning, application, misconceptions and misuses.  In particular, this seminar will focus on contextualizing ideas in the scientific and pop culture literature. You will establish a basis to challenge and accept information, framing the environment in which the information “exists,” and analyze its transformation to knowledge. As such, you will provide significance to your developing knowledge base, and ultimately, put meaning to learning.  Furthermore, we will survey the art and common practice of storytelling in science.  Our overall objective will be to deconstruct and rebuild thought processes in the context of the natural sciences.


HEST-001-04 (Joan Riley and Doug Little)

In this section we will examine the evidence of wellness related to college health issues. Specifically, we will explore the motivators, facilitators and obstacles to well being as a college student. The American College Health Assessment, http://www.achancha.org/, will provide assessment data to inform our examination of the issues impacting health and wellness of first year college students.  


HEST-001-05 (Robert Friedland and Marianne Lyons)

This seminar will introduce new students to the programs, resources, and opportunities of GU and NHS.  This will include the library, the career center, and Counseling and Psychiatric services.  Students will also have the opportunity through outside required attendance to learn more about time management/academic enrichment opportunities, health careers, internships and study abroad opportunities.  In addition to the course topic, we will entertain discussions about students’ common concerns, such as managing the transition to college.  Our goal is to make the first year at Georgetown University a rich and 
productive one and to provide students with the tools necessary for academic and personal success.   

Required Book: Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Matters in the End, by 

Atul Gawande; (Profile Books Ltd: October 1, 2014).  Any version of the book will do, but used paperback and Kindle will be the least expensive.


HEST-001-06 (Alex Theos & Sarah Shohet)

HEST-001-07 (Susan Coleman and Justin Smith) 

This seminar will introduce students to the values of Georgetown University and the School of Nursing & Health Studies through exploration of wellbeing, resilience, meaning making, and reflection. We will explore and analyze these topics through selected readings, class based discussions and personal narratives. Our goal for this course is to help students connect with each other, the university and larger DC community.



HEST-001-08 (TBD and Brian Floyd)

In this section we will examine the evidence of wellness related to college health issues. The American College Health Assessment data, http://www.achancha.org/, will provide a framework of our examination of issues impacting health and wellness for first year college students. We will think about health as a concept and learn about health promotion as a discipline. We will explore the role of human behavior and reflect about what shapes people’s (and our own) health and health beliefs across the lifespan.
