INAF 311 - India Innov Studio:Pub Health1
Each year, this studio-based course examines a different problem facing India. The course is taught through a multidisciplinary lens and operates in partnership with Indian government and civil society stakeholders to design, prototype and implement a solution on the ground. This year, the topic is improving public health, specifically reducing infant and maternal mortality.

India's public health system is under severe strain. While tremendous gains have been made over the past few decades, the country is still far from meeting its public health goals as further reductions in infant and maternal mortality rates prove elusive. A primary constraint is changing behavior of front-line health workers and empowering citizens to demand better public health services. In this class, we will design interventions to improve the quality of public health governance in the state of Bihar, India.

The course is team taught in modules and led by Professors Irfan Nooruddin and Mark Giordano. In the fall semester of this studio, students will first academically explore the political, economic, and sociological dimensions of public health. The spring semester will focus on the development and implementation of potential solutions, which students will design working in close collaboration with experts in the field and government and civil society stakeholders. Selected students will be offered the opportunity to travel to India during summer 2018. 

The studio is designed to be a year long course (Fall, Spring). Students who take both semesters will be given preference for selection and funding for the summer trip to India. 

Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor.

Please send Irfan (in62@georgetown.edu) and Mark (mg1382@georgetown.edu) your response to the following two questions in 250 words (total) or fewer by Wednesday, April 19th:

1) What is your major and what interests you about the topic?
2) The 3 core knowledge areas of this year's class are India, public health, and communications. Of the three, which is of most interest to you and what background, if any, do you have in it? 

Students will be selected to ensure a diversity of backgrounds and interests rather than on traditional academic accomplishments.

Students need not include INAF-311 among the preregistration requests, but should leave its meetings times open in the schedule or be prepared to drop conflicting courses.
