INTH 292 - Intrnshp I: Community Org
The course includes both a seminar and an internship component. As part of the internship, students will have an opportunity to see and actively participate in the inner workings of a community-based, health-focused NGO serving multicultural populations. The seminar will allow students to examine concepts related to cultural dialogue and to compare the theoretical and practical aspects of working with vulnerable populations.
More specifically, the integrated seminars, readings, and internship focus on: (1) basic cultural and socioeconomic elements that explains and shapes behaviors, interpersonal relations in general and the provision of health care in particular, (2) the organization and roles of non-governmental community service organizations, and (3) how support for community programs is secured through grants from foundations and other sources. Understanding these elements is a necessary pre-requisite for successful leadership in a multi-national community and in international health.
