KREN 306 - Intro to Korean Culture
This course is designed to provide introductory knowledge of Korean history, culture, and values through various media. Students will learn about Korea through the lens of its history, religion, and philosophy. Besides the main textbook, students will read articles and chapters from print media, watch movies and documentary clips, and explore various internet resources. There will also be a focus on examining modern Korean pop culture that is referred to “Hallyu (the Korean Wave).” The activities will include lectures, student presentations and class discussions. Through this course, students will gain a strong foundation on Korean heritage and an understanding of Korea’s role as the linchpin of North East Asia. In completion of this course, students will be able to understand the cultural values, develop their critical thinking and cultural identity. Students will also develop cross-cultural insights by comparing the Korean society with other Asian countries. There will be cultural excursions to Cultural Institutions such as KORUS and guest speakers will be invited to the course so that students will have opportunities to experience the culture themselves.  Course conducted in English.  Prerequisite: None.
