LASP 511 - Sust Dev Trend:Centrl Amer/Car
The objective of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the evolving issues that underlie sustainable development in Central America and the Caribbean Region. We will explore historical forces that have shaped and continue modeling Central America’s modern societies while analyzing the colonial legacy, the politics of race, ethnicity, gender and the environmental challenges in the seven countries of the isthmus and the Caribbean island nations.
The course will focus on general trends affecting the region as a whole and will be divided in three main sections: first, the study of Central America through an historical perspective and the examination of political and environmental issues, including regional integration and development; second, we will have an overview of specific country studies and forces that affect environmental sustainability for the Central American nations, aspects of natural resources management, distribution of resources, migration, poverty and sustainability and also the status of the indigenous populations will be analyzed; thirdly, we will study the Caribbean Basin while exploring the logic for studying Central America and the Caribbean together. This session will focus on the Spanish speaking island nations. Finally, an independent module on action research (AR) methodologies will be part of the course, in order to provide students with the research skill and tools to conduct first hand research on topics that interest them in relation to developmental challenges in the region.
