LASP 579 - Peace Process&Post-Conflict:LA
This course will examine internal armed conflicts and attempts at negotiated settlements in Latin America and other parts of the world. It will approach the study of peace processes from three related perspectives:

1) the theoretical literature, using some of the best recent literature derived from peace processes across the globe in the last two decades;
2) case studies incorporating an in-depth examination of specific Latin American cases -- principally Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala,  also Peru, Nicaragua and Haiti, in both pre- and negotiating stages, as well as, where applicable, the challenges of the post-conflict period;
3) issue analysis such as Humanitarian Intervention, United Nations and Third party facilitation, DDR, transitional justice, and community-based peace-making and post-conflict development.

The final third of the course will be dedicated to simulated negotiations in two cases (likely El Salvador and Colombia) where students will enact an actual session at the negotiating table playing the role of key participants: guerrillas, government, etc.

By the end of the course, students will not only have a “hands-on” experience in peace negotiations in internal armed conflicts, they will also have a strong understanding of some of the key issues, literature and cases related to conflict resolution as it applies to Latin America, a region under-represented in the theoretical and case literature.
