LASP 605 - Qualitative &Particip Research
The objective of this course is to provide students with an introduction to Participatory Action Research and Qualitative data collection and analysis in order to understand main streams of thought in the evaluation field. The course will be divided in three parts; first, we will analyze case studies, literature reviews, we will learn how to master focus groups discussions and acquire interview skills to collect meaningful qualitative data and to triangulate the findings to determine specific categories or results. The second part will include a section with a focus on Gender Analysis. The third and final section will include a full module on Participatory Action Research (PAR), in particular, Participation in Human Inquiry theory and tools for data collection (Mapping, Photovoice, Matrixes and Ranking exercises). Students will be involved in a practical exercise and will be tasked with conducting a qualitative evaluation through interviews, mapping, photography or the interpretation of symbols while conducting a real life project of their choice as part of the final class assignment.
