LING 224 - Grammatical Analysis
In this course, we will examine the (mostly unconscious) knowledge that each native speaker has of the structure of his or her language. We will focus on the structure of words and sentences in particular, examining their properties and uncovering patterns in their distribution. We will adopt and refine a formal model of sentence structure in the tradition of Generative Grammar, a fruitful line of research that has been the mainstay of most research in sentence structure since the 1950s. We will gain not only knowledge related to the structure of words and phrases, but also significant experience with the tools and methodology employed by researchers in linguistic theory. Requirements for the course include twice-a-week homework assignments plus a midterm and a final.
