LING 432 - Ethnography of Poetry
The Text:  A reading package of collection 100 poems from various cultures.  Other materials:  T. S. Eliot, Selected Essays (1932); S. Langer, Feeling and Form (1933); Paul Valery, Selected Writings (1964).
 
1. Introduction: Ethnography of poetry: Eliot on Dante. 

2. Poetry as ethnography of life: (the life of emotions and desires; an instrument of knowledge, an art in the service of culture and civilization; a collection of words that bears in itself the substance of culture: Eliot on Shakespeare; , Langer, Chapters  1, 2, 3; Valery, Essays on various subjects.

3. Poetry and feeling: Langer, Poesis; Valery, On poetry

4. Readings, analysis, and discussion: From  the  collection of 100 poems from various cultures.
