This class focuses on individual differences amongst second language learners and speakers. These include motivation, the understanding and realization of interactional opportunities and linguistic identities, and how these impact language production and development. We will study a diverse set of linguistic forms focusing on speakers of Mandarin Chinese, Farsi and Spanish, and their ESL/EFL learning outcomes. Members of class, all of whom must have taken a class in research methodology, and a prior seminar, will conduct research and complete a substantial research paper, individually or in pairs, covering one of the topics of the class.
