MATH 040 - Probability and Statistics |

This course will introduce students to the basic concepts, logic, and issues involved in statistical reasoning, as well as basic statistical methods used to analyze data and evaluate studies. The major topics to be covered include methods for exploratory data analysis, an introduction to sampling and experimental design, elementary probability theory and random variables, and methods for statistical inference including simple linear regression. The objectives of this course are to help students develop a critical approach to the evaluation of study designs, data and results, and to develop skills in the application of basic statistical methods in empirical research. An important feature of the course will be the use of statistical software to facilitate the understanding of important statistical ideas and for the implementation of data analysis. The course has two lectures and one lab section. Cannot be taken for credit if the student has already taken ECON 121, Gov 201, OPIM 173, IPOL 320 or MATH 140. College Economics and Political Economy majors should enroll in ECON 121, rather than MATH 040. This course does NOT satisfy the Mathematics minor or majors requirement for a Statistics class--these students should enroll in MATH 140. Seniors and Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical students must get special permission to enroll in this course. 4.000 Credit hours 4.000 Lecture hours 0.000 Lab hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Distance, Laboratory, Lecture Mathematics Department Course Attributes: SFS/STIA Math/Science Restrictions: May not be enrolled in one of the following Colleges: McDonough School of Business School of Foreign Service May not be enrolled in one of the following Majors: Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical May not be enrolled as the following Classifications: Senior Mutual Exclusion: This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: ECON 121 This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: GOVT 201 This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: IPOL 320 This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: MATH 04- This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: MATH 140 This course carries a mutual exclusion with the following courses; you may not enroll in it if you have completed any of the following with a passing grade: OPIM 173 |
