MUSC 332 - Music in the Enlightenment
This course focuses on European music, culture, and identity of the eighteenth century. Through the study of select sources (scholarly essays, historical readings, and music), we will develop diverse understandings of the concepts of “Pre-Classicism” and “Classicism.” We will approach these broad themes chronologically and through an overview of the varied musical capitals in Western Europe. The content will focus on acknowledged composers and their principal compositions. Emphasis will be placed on the genres of opera, the symphony, string quartet, concerto and sonata. 
Prerequisites: MUSC 041 or MUSC 114
