MUSC 461 - Music Industry Seminar
It’s no secret that for musicians, the world is moving faster than ever. Revenue streams continue to shift as new distribution platforms grow in popularity. Laws concerning copyright and public policy are in flux, and through it all, questions about net neutrality and sustainability persist. It’s never been more important for the music community to get engaged. That’s what this course is all about. 

Designed as a hands-on seminar for students thinking about careers in the Music Industry, MUSC 461 explores a range of topics, from media legislation, copyright enforcement and censorship to artist compensation in the digital age, social justice issues and the future of music journalism. 

The central goals of the course are: 1) to give students a clear understanding of how the Music Industry has developed over the last decade 2) to prepare students for employment in the music industry as it stands now and 3) to give students the opportunity to think about the future of the music industry in an entrepreneurial way. 

Each week will feature a discussion of recent articles/news events (Mondays) and a guest speaker from the music industry (Wednesdays). The core of the course will be a conference and a series of field trips focusing on the impact of contemporary politics on the music industry. These events will put students in contact with top performers, lawyers, politicians and policy advocates working in connection with the music/media industry. The first half of the course will be dedicated to preparing students to participate in and network at these events. During the second half of the semester, students will divide into small groups and develop business plans, research projects and/or industry strategies for the future. By the end of the semester, each student will have completed a Music Industry Portfolio (Resume, CV, brief assessments of current Music Industry issues, music reviews, a project overview, and copy writing samples), which will assist them in future internship and job applications.
