PHYS 519 - Soft Condensed Matter
This course will provide a firm foundation in the fundamental physics needed to understand the properties of soft materials. Unlike hard materials (metals, oxides, correlated electron systems and etc) discussed in solid-state physics and quantum courses, soft materials are generally classical in nature. Soft materials are almost always heterogeneous and far from equilibrium. Topics to be covered include colloidal dispersions, gels, liquid crystals, polymers and macromolecular systems. The tools of this course are rooted in classical statistical mechanics (equilibrium and non-equilibrium) and electrostatics.
