PHYS 551 - Science/Society:Global Challng
This seminar introduces students to some of the most significant and complex science, business and public interest challenges of our time including: reducing carbon emissions, meeting growing global energy demand, and developing sustainable businesses and societies. Guest speakers - including scientists, venture capitalists, business leaders, congressional staff, and journalists - will examine the science, business, politics and public perceptions surrounding these challenges. Throughout the semester, students will break into groups and develop a report on one "Global Challenge" that covers: the science, pending legislation, relevant activity in the private sector, and the various policy options and barriers for solving the problem. MBA students must include in their report a detailed evaluation of a company initiative that addresses sustainability - in particular for Fall '08, the GE Ecomagination program - and evaluate how the initiative advances corporate strategy. The course will bring together a holistic approach to evaluating business objectives through the interactions between science, politics and the public.
