SEST 543 - Crisis Dec-Making & Sim
This purpose of this course is to prepare students as future policy advisers and policymakers to make high quality decisions in the face of potential, future national security crises. The class will use national security case studies, combined with literature on different kinds of decision making, to develop ideas and experiences that will serve in the future as a decision making tool kit for the students. The goal is that students will be able to rely on this tool kit when they might be forced to make crucial policy decisions under great stress where there are high consequences for national security.

In addition to using the case study method and class discussion to teach crisis decision making, students in this course will design and build a crisis simulation exercise open to the entire student body of the Security Studies Program. In completing this exercise, students will learn about both the process of decision making in general, and designing such simulations in particular. It will call on students' creativity as well as self-discipline. The class will be able to add any and all ideas to the simulation, both in its design and in its content, but the class will also be running the game near the end of the semester, which will demand a good deal of focused work in the early weeks to stay on track. Learning objectives include a good sense of how to make a good decision, the limits of effective decision-making strategies, and the design and execution of strategic-level war games.
