SPAN 200 - Gateway to Culture
This course provides an overview of the modern history, society, and culture of Spain. Topics of reading and class discussion include the development of a national identity and its shortcomings, the transition between dictatorship and democracy, social and family structures, the political system, the role of Spain in the European Union, the situation of women, nationalisms within the Spanish State (Basque, Catalan, Galician), and the role of the arts—painting, architecture, film, literature, and theater—as well as the media. The topics of discussion, as well as films and documentaries, will serve as the basis for writing assignments where through a process of production, correction, and revision students will improve their written Spanish.
