SPAN 727 - STAT Meth in SLA Research
This seminar introduces quantitative methods commonly used in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Applied Linguistics research. The contents will cover traditional univaraite approaches including ANOVA, multiple regression and Chi Square tests, and selected multivariate methods such as factor analysis and cluster analysis. Emphases are on the conceptual understanding of various techniques, interpretation/presentation of the findings and hands-on experience of applying the methods to real data. Examples to illustrate the methods will be demonstrated with popular software packages such as SPSS. One unique feather of this seminar is that all examples and exercises will be taken from recently published articles in SLA journals. At the end of semester, students are expected to be able to understand publications using the methods covered in this course and to analyze their own data for publication. This course is reading and analysis intensive.
