STIA 403 - Promises/Pitfalls Sci. & Tech.
The Promises and Pitfalls of Science and Technology
Advances in science and technology have revolutionized the world, creating new economic markets, opening new knowledge domains, reshaping domestic and international political discourse and interventions, accelerating and expanding social movements, and promising to address intractable development and sustainability challenges. Notwithstanding major advances, much of the world has yet to benefit from advances in science and technology: despite the fruits of the Green Revolution, issues of food security and food sovereignty continue to affect much of the world; despite the rapid spread of information and communication technologies (ICTs), the gender digital divide continues to grow, excluding both women and children; and revolutionary advances in medicine are often cost-prohibitive to many citizens of the world. This course takes a critical but pragmatic look at both the promises and pitfalls of science and technology as solutions to the pressing problems of the last and present century. Students will enhance their ability to interrogate and articulate arguments along the promise-pitfall spectrum, to arrive at a balanced understanding of the differential contributions of science and technology to society.

Dr. Andrew Tarter, an applied anthropologist, is a Science and Technology Policy Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
