GOVT 360 - DepSem: Probs US Foreign Pol
Government 360, Dept. Seminar: Selected Problems in American Foreign Policy
This Department Seminar provides an opportunity to explore in depth
major questions and problems in American foreign policy. It is
designed mainly for juniors and seniors who are Government majors or
IPOL concentrators in SFS. Others may find the seminar suitable
provided they have had coursework or have done substantial background
reading in foreign policy. We will begin the semester by reading and
discussing recent literature and competing visions for U.S. grand
strategy. These include arguments for retrenchment or offshore
balancing versus the case for continued American global engagement and
leadership. Tentatively, the topics we will explore include the
historical legacy, the Bush and Obama Doctrines, Trump foreign policy,
the Iran nuclear issue, relations with China, Middle East policy,
human rights, liberal internationalism and its limits, public opinion
and U.S. foreign policy, and whether America retains the capacity to
lead. This is a tentative list, and in our initial session we will
consider adding or deleting subjects from this agenda. Students will
be expected to present three short papers (2-3pps) in class and to
write a seminar paper that addresses a major foreign policy issue. By
the end of the semester, you should have a broad grasp not only of
major problem areas in U.S. foreign policy, but of different
approaches and interpretations of America’s role in contemporary
world politics.
