The roles and responsibilities of people in the workplace have changed dramatically. In many ways, greater equality and equity have been achieved. However, some important issues remain: pay equity, limited diversity in C-Suite roles, the rise of affinity-based Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), the need for more accessible and flexible work environments and schedules, and much more.
In your experiences as a student, as a teammate, and in internships and other workplaces, you may have encountered identity-related challenges, or you may be anticipating what you may encounter as you build your career. You may be considering what might be good ways to navigate challenges, or how to be a supportive ally to others who are facing them. Another perspective would be that of the manager: how can knowledge about DEI issues in the workplace help you to foster a culture that eliminates barriers, and encourages the success and satisfaction of all employees, while meeting the needs of clients and customers?
Many topics that we will discuss will be controversial, and some have sensitive elements. At the same time, there is a lot of research or other evidence that can and should inform our views. So, I hope everyone will come to the class willing to learn from this evidence and to engage respectfully with everyone else, even where opinions differ dramatically, so that we can learn from each other. And I hope we can blend these, in helping us to devise practical action steps wherever appropriate.
