We will read three novels written at the height of the novelist’s mastery: Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. We will take the time to read each carefully, to consider how Dickens’ art emerged from his time and place, and we will survey some of the most recent criticism and analysis about these books. Students will prepare brief presentations for our in-class discussions, and will write substantial essays as we end our consideration of each novel.
