Lannan Seminar - 30802 - ENGL 650 - 01
Course Description: The Lannan Seminar seminar is a special seminar devoted to interaction with visiting writers from all over the world. We meet with the writers and listen to their talks and readings. We also participate in a two-day spring symposium featuring major thinkers, activists and writers and which engages with the Lannan Center’s core principles of art and social practice. This year’s theme is Africa Imagines: Reversing the Gaze. The seminar is designed to allow creative writers to try their hands at a range of styles. Prose, creative non-fiction, essay, poetry and reportage - students will explore and cultivate their creativity through readings, discussions, experiments, and the creation of new work in a variety of forms and blended forms. We will read and discuss selected works from contemporary writers, including that of visiting writers to the Lannan Speakers’ Series. And we will, of course, write - in class exercises as well as longer writing projects. By the end of the semester we compile portfolios of our own original work and produce an independent final project (creative or scholarly) under the guidance of the instructor. The workshop format includes guided peer critique of your work so you must be ready to share and involve yourself in classroom discussions. This course is taught by a practicing writer, interim Lannan Director Aminatta Forna, who has published widely in both fiction and non-fiction.
