ENGL 712 - Intro to Critical Theory
This course will provide an overview of principles, concepts, and themes that have organized literary studies. We will focus on a wide array of theoretical schools of thought, including Russian formalism, narratology, Frankfurt school, psychoanalysis, structuralism and post-structuralism, feminist and queer theories, and postcolonial theory. We will, in turn, investigate how literary works might not only become legible through these frameworks, but also resist, supplement, or critique them through their singular linguistic and rhetorical conduct. Particular attention will be paid to concepts of authority, time, agency, and interpretation as they are staged in both the literary and theoretical works. Course requirements are presentation, seminar paper, and postings on blackboard.
