|GERM 540 - Gender&Postcolonial Perspctive|
Methodical pluralism in literary studies includes analytical approaches in gender studies and postcolonial studies that focus on the perception and construction of different forms of otherness and processes of 'othering'. New interpretations of gender relations and cultural contacts in canonical texts such as Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris", Kleist's "Die Verlobung in St. Domingo" or Fontane's "Effie Briest" show in particular how productive both areas are, and also how they work together in an intersectional perspective. In the seminar we will read selected theoretical texts, e.g., from Judith Butler and Edward W. Said, and ask: How can these theories be turned into useful tools for the analysis of aesthetic phenomena? How can we make sense of specific themes and aesthetic phenomena with the help of these theories?
